"The Old Somerset Railroad - A Lifeline for Northern Mainers" - a highly readable and informative book that presents how the railroad in the pine tree state began in 1872 and ran for 56 years from The North Woods around Moosehead Lake down to southern Maine and back again. Lots of entertaining tales of real people that pioneered this lovely but demanding state.
"While You're Here Doc, Farmyard Adventures of a Maine Veterinarian" - Follows the amusing, informative, and always entertaining life of a real vet as he cares for a variety of animals from cows to monkeys in rural Maine in the mid 20th century. His experiences with both animals, people, and even the travails of Maine weather make for a great read.
